When the manual was first published there was a lot of confusion as to the purpose of a policy and protocol manual. Some of the reviewers were looking for another text book, some a primary resource, some didn't quite understand why the manual seemed so repetitive, and still others were afraid that it was a "cookbook" approach to lactation consulting. Perhaps the misunderstandings were because protocol manuals were relatively new to health care professionals in 1998. The Guidelines International Network (an international not-for-profit association involved in clinical practice guidelines) was just founded in 2006.

The general idea is for the policies and protocols to give other practitioners an idea of what it is that we Lactation Consultant's do during a consultation, how we make an assessment and recommend a treatment plan.

The manual is a useful addition to any lactation consultant's practice.
